History - or The Reason Why

The charitable trust was formed in 2007 following the passing away of Lynda Henshaw in March of that year.
Lynda had fought against breast cancer for three and a half years having had a series of initial treatments at Kings Mill, including mastectomy surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, suffering all the side effects that seem common place to cancer treatments. Lynda had then returned to work in the civil service for only six months before finding that the cancer had returned. At this point Lynda was referred to
Nottingham city hospital and was entered into a trial chemotherapy, signs were encouraging but the side effects became debilitating leaving it difficult and tiring for Lynda to walk

Following a recovery period Lynda agreed to try a different form of chemotherapy, once again the side effects were typical including sickness, tiredness and hair loss again. The cancer was halted once again but was only having a limited effect. After a short break from treatments Lynda began another form of chemotherapy in 2006. During the summer the cancer spread to other parts of the body and Lynda received radiation treatment to the head, with a potentially life threatening side effect of diabetes due to the steroids used to combat the radiotherapy. It was at this point that Lynda lost the use of her right eye and had to also cope with the spread of the cancer to her skin.

Once again Lynda began another course of chemotherapy but found it increasingly difficult to cope with the rigours of treatment and decided to have a break from treatments. In late March 2007 Lynda was referred to the Park hospital to have fluid drained from her lungs and returned home after nearly a week to receive care and support from her family, friends and the excellent Hospice at Home service.

Lynda sadly passed away at home on the 30th March 2007.

Throughout Lynda’s fight against breast cancer she observed a number of situations that did not appear fair to the patients undergoing similar treatments. It is with these thoughts of Lynda’s that we have formed the charitable trust to try and fill what appears to be a gap in assisting those suffering from recurring breast cancer. (See Home Page)

It appears that some of the things you would expect to be provided are not provided more than once. For example, if you are given a grant for a hair piece during your first course of chemotherapy you are not entitled to another should you have the misfortune of needing chemotherapy a second time?

We therefore would like to try and make a difference in a small way to those having to cope with the fight against breast cancer.
